Nitin Gadkari, the Union Road & transport minister, has addressed the media on the huge Bharatmala highway Project on 25th of October, 2017. The minister said that the highway projects with a value of almost 8 lakh crore being operated under BMP or Bharatmala Pariyojana. This is a new umbrella plan for the highways sector, which will focus on maximizing the road traffic movement efficiency across the country by filling up serious infrastructure gaps. While talking more on this project, he also added that the quality of highways would be so superior that no potholes would be seen on this construction for the next ten decades.
On 24th of this month, a plan to construct 83,677km of highways got the approval by the cabinet. This project to build highways is planned to be completed by March 2022 and will include the cost of near about 7 lakh crores. The Bharatmala project is included in this plan and captures the worth of almost 5.35 lakh crore.
After approval of the first phase of the project to construct 34,800 km of highways that includes balance work of near about 10,000 km under NHDP or National highways Development Programme, the minister stated that all the details for 25,000 km of highway project are just about to complete.

Further, he added to the comments that this procedure of giving the contracts would take place in a quick and clear way. Gadkari also stated that the entire project would be kept away from corruption. This massive infrastructure project, including Bharatmala, will witness the nation having 50 corridors together with the existing six.
